An evanescent, childlike female figure, her gaze seemingly a little lost, is surrounded by the blur of a glittering, unstable universe - yet she appears indifferent to it, impervious to the chaos on all sides.
Kodomo ni Fumuki (Japanese for " Not Suitable for Children " ) is a series of unsettling portraits by Marlène-b, in eclectic styles ranging from calligraphy to graffiti. The female figure that reappears in each piece portrays the innocence of childhood as it confronts the troubles of the adult world. Notwithstanding the freshness of the artist ' s technique, heavily influenced by the Japanese anime cartoons that marked her early years, the overall mood betrays an anxiety and disquiet that are not those of a child. Marlène-b ' s First Nations manga, itself symbolic of a less tarnished age, reflects an artistic project that is equally concerned with the digital exploration of mutating imagery - its substance and texture - and with the artist's reflections on her personal preoccupations and fears.
In recent years, Marlène-b has explored the esthetic of spontaneity. Every stroke, mark and element first emerges in the purest freedom, independent of her conscious will. This allows her to leave self-censorship by the wayside; space can be overtaken by the void, and all that remains is the ritual of the artist in movement. Yet she uses a computer, scanner and printer as her canvas, brushes and paint, to the same degree as her watercolour or ink. The result is a play of construction that begins spontaneously and then becomes organized through the superimposition, inversion and fragmentation of a new, machine-mediated reality.

Her signature, half stamp and half Japanese-inspired calligraphy, is a distillation of her artistic interests: a mixture of the cultural influences that she appropriates to produce her own creations. Born in 1975, Marlène-b is an independent artist and graphic designer who lives and works in Montreal. She chooses her projects with care, always with an eye to the public good and to social, humanitarian and cultural causes. Trained in fine art at CÉGEP André-Laurendeau in the 90s, then in graphic design at the Université du Québec à Montréal, Marlène-b has forged a unique style that gives her artistic endeavours an unmistakable personal flavour.
2008, Pop Média released a collection of Marlène-b's illustrations , which showcased the little First Nations manga that provides the muse for her new series, Kodomo ni Fumuki.

In it, Marlène-b uses fashion design (an urban kimono) to promote genuine personal and collective responsibility, taking on the challenge of marketing a designer product that is simultaneously unique, fair-trade and green.
